The mentally handicapped daughter of the victims, Carl and Claire Bruckner, is missing. He also has a past that haunts him throughout the novel, causing hallucinations that may also be related to his continuing drug, alcohol and cigarette abuse. The rookie investigator is assigned to a double homicide on a rural farm some 15 miles outside Richmond. Can you explain how you create a character like Samuel Doyle? What Doyle fails to realise as he follows the various clues is that wherever he goes, he is spreading disease — and not just any disease, but Yersinia pestis. It is essentially a police procedural thriller, but with supernatural undercurrents, that are so sparse, so understated, that somehow the book is made all the more frightening as a result. And the farm is covered with dead bodies: dozens of cats, sheep, goats, cows, and one dead horse. One of the victims has been interred in a makeshift tomb, while the other is stuck half-in, half-out of a hope chest overflowing with cat litter.

He's been promoted up from Narcotics, where he developed an unfortunate habit of skimming some of the seized evidence and became addicted to oxycontin. The mentally handicapped daughter of the victims, Carl and Claire Bruckner, is missing. He has a mistress, an alcohol problem, a prescription drug dependency, and a burgeoning self-loathing that alienates his wife and family. . It requires an entirely different set of muscles from being a school principal all day.

He has a mistress, an alcohol problem, a prescription drug dependency and a burgeoning self-loathing that alienates him from wife and family. Sailor Doyle is a newly-minted Homicide detective with the Virginia State Police. The pace of my whole life has to change, to slow significantly, for several hours. What Doyle expects to be an open-and-shut case is anything but, with two bodies found at a remote farmhouse 15 miles from the city of Richmond, both in varying states of decay. And the farm is covered with dead bodies: dozens of cats, sheep, goats, cows, and one dead horse. What Doyle fails to realize as he follows the various clues is that wherever he goes, he is spreading disease? I run or bike most days, because it keeps me from eating my own weight in French fries, slurping down a quart of cappuccino chocolate chunk, and chasing it all with an oak cask full of flavorful Jack Daniels. The mentally handicapped daughter of the victims, Carl and Claire Bruckner, is missing.

The mentally handicapped daughter of the victims, Carl and Claire Bruckner, is missing. I suppose my decision to write a supernatural crime novel came from watching him deal with the stress, the miles, the bureaucracy, and the felons case after case. I would not read more by this author. In this introductory section we learn about his background in the Narcotics division and his marital life, also seeing the beginning of his affair with post-graduate pathology student, Sarah. Ce livre est au format ePub protégé. I also hated the way they refer to the missing disabled woman, using highly derogatory terms. What Doyle fails to realise as he follows the various clues is that wherever he goes, he is spreading disease — and not just any disease, but Yersinia pestis.

Using naturally-occurring, sylvatic plague gave me the opportunity to play with the idea that we all have poisons that get in our blood, even Molly Bruckner, the innocent villain. He studied classical guitar, then moved from a musical career to education. Once those demons start seeping through the drywall at the Bruckner farm, 15 Miles is - I hope - as frightening as any slasher story. What Doyle fails to realise as he follows the various clues is that wherever he goes, he is spreading disease - and not just any disease, but Yersinia pestis. For me, what's frightening is that Sailor's character could be many of us after we've skated a bit too far onto thin ice, then regretted it.

I keep an extra pair in the trunk of my car for just those embarrassing moments. He has a mistress, an alcohol problem, a prescription drug dependency, and a burgeoning self-loathing that alienates his wife and family. That change is what I enjoy most about it. The poisons in Sailor's blood are as qualitative as they are quantitative, one of the things that makes him a gripping character for me and, hopefully, for anyone who's ever cracked open a bottle of wine after a hard day's work. The book could read like any other procedural, except that most of the first-person narrative crime scene investigation, evidence collection, witness interviewing is filtered through a drug-addled haze.

But don't lose faith in him yet. Fans of Joe Hill will love being scared by Rob Scott! Hill's writing scares the pants off me. In terms of the plot, there are some truly surprising and shocking elements to the investigation, particularly the incredible number of dead and feral cats prowling the farmhouse, attacking anything that looks like it might provide food. Writing requires that I shut that faucet off completely. Then, I drink six gallons of Diet Coke before dinner.

As a high school principal, I move at full throttle all day, navigating from one crisis to another. It was a bit hard to follow at first, but once I understood that the narrator was completely drugged out of his mind, I got along just fine. The mentally handicapped daughter of the victims, Carl and Claire Bruckner, is missing. Being very familiar with the literary device of the flawed hero - particularly in relation to crime novels - however this one was just too flawed. What Doyle fails to realise as he follows the various clues is that wherever he goes, he is spreading disease - and not just any disease, but Yersinia pestis. There are some truly shocking moments, and the description of the corpses and murder scene is highly gruesome. Overall, this novel is an intriguing mystery, but the main character really deterred me from the plot.

Of course it does not help that this detective is carrying so much personal baggage that he makes the local luggage store look bad. Doyle soon discovers that Bruckner was a Marine captain who lost his leg in Vietnam thanks to the incompetence of his commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Lake - now retired General Robert Lake, and Republican Party presidential hopeful, who will be speaking in Richmond on July fourth - the following evening. I'll be pleased if readers find Sailor Doyle's adventures half as exciting. One of the victims has been interred in a makeshift tomb, while the other is stuck half-in, half-out of a hope chest overflowing with cat litter. Granted, he finds sobriety frightening, and he still manages to uncover a truckload of trouble, but at least he's off the pills and the booze. Rob Scott: Again, Sailor's an extreme case, but many of us self-medicate as we deal with life's hills and valleys.
